We Four in Egypt

Now back in the US!

Questions from strangers

“Is that your son?”

“Is that your child?”

“Is that your baby? Really?”

“Where is your husband?”

“Is your husband from here?”

“Are those your kids?”

“Are they brothers?”

“Are you his mother?”

“Is your husband Egyptian?”

  1. We’ve had, “She has ‘chinky’ eyes.” Yes, they actually said ‘chinky’. Also, “She looks Japanese.”

  2. Oh my! I can’t believe people actually said that! That is terrible.

I will say one advantage of not knowing much Arabic is that we can’t understand most of what people say about us. My friend who knows Arabic says it’s pretty bad.
